Top 10 Reasons Why You Need to Backup Office 365

Do you know that Microsoft has a disclaimer for data loss in their terms of service that indemnifies them of any responsibility for customer data loss due to user errors and results of software designed with malicious intentions such as malware, viruses, ransomware, etc.?
Microsoft ensures data availability through multiple servers and data replication, which takes care of natural disasters, calamities, and localized incidents. But what would happen to data in case of accidental deletions, ransomware attacks, viruses, or data corruption?
Taking a backup of your Office 365 data is not an option anymore, it is a necessity!
In this edition, we discuss 10 Reasons why you need to backup Office 365
Top (10) Reasons Why You Need to Backup Office 365
1.      Retention Policy Gaps and Confusion: Office 365 retention policies are hard to keep up with, let alone manage. A backup provides longer, more accessible retention all protected and stored in one place for easy recovery.
2.      Deletion of Important Data through User Error or Malicious Intention: Employees may delete good data by accident or with the intention of removing duplication. Additionally, a disgruntled employee may also do the same with malicious intent.
3.      Phishing and Ransomware Attacks: Such attacks can encrypt your whole drive leaving you with no choice but to pay ransom, unless of course you have a valid copy of backup to rely on.
4.      Malware and Virus Entry via Onedrive Sync Client: In case of an virus or malware infection on your PC, the infection may spread to your data in the cloud very quickly.
5.      Employee Turnover: A manual backup of data by Sync Client cannot be restored with the same sharing permissions. Besides restoring data with its sharing permissions, a 3rd party backup solution can provide cross-user restore for easy retrieval.
6.      Outage and Shutdown: Azure suffered a massive outage for 2 days in January 2019 during which people were unable to access their mailboxes. If an outage of this magnitude were to happen again, you will have access to your data if it is backed up by a reputable 3rd-party software.
7.      3rd Party Application Illicit Consent Attack: If you have installed a 3rd-party application on your Office 365 account, you may become a victim of illicit consent grant attack, whereby your Office 365 data may be stolen.
8.      Lost or Stolen Devices: A lost or stolen device can lead to leak, or even a complete wipe-out of critical business data. In such a case, restoration of data from backup can come to the rescue.
9.      Employee Overwriting Data: Onedrive collaborative features allow multiple users to work on the same file, which can also lead to accidental overwrite or erasure of critical data. Rolling back with Onedrive is only possible for the restoration of all data, but with a 3rd party tool, one can restore back of just one single file or folder.
10.  Legal and Compliance Requirements: Ensure you can retrieve mailbox data during legal action and to meet any regulatory compliance need’s.
